Mexico acknowledges the important work done by journalists. They contribute to consolidate our democracy, Rule of Law, and the construction of stronger institutions.

While there have been great achievements, recognized by multiple international human rights institutions, there are still major challenges.

Mexico is committed to address these challenges in order to ensure greater effectiveness of the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists.

During the "Actions for Freedom of Expression and for the Protection of Journalists" meeting on May, 2017, three actions were announced:

Some beneficiaries of the Mechanism have been victims of aggressions, but were unharmed thanks to the Mechanism’s protection measures. No journalist has been killed or disappeared while being a beneficiary of the Mechanism; still, Mexico is aware of the importance of strengthening its capacity to develop long-term policies to prevent and investigate crimes against journalists.
