Negotiation process

Fourteen years after the entry into force of the Mexico-EU Global Agreement (2000), both partners agreed to modernize this instrument in response to the growing strategic weight of Mexico and an increasingly integrated and comprehensive EU, as well as the need to enhance its capacity joint action in the face of global challenges and opportunities. Negotiations began in 2015 and in record time agreements were reached in principle both on their political and cooperation elements (November 2017) and on their commercial and investment elements (May 2018). Subsequent technical negotiations ended in September 2019 and April 2020, respectively. The legal review of the entire text has concluded in September 2020. Once the procedural steps still pending are completed, the signing of the modernized Mexico-EU Global Agreement is outlined towards the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021, within the framework of the VIII Mexico - EU Summit.
