Mexico - European Union Agreement on Science, Technology and Innovation

Meeting of the 10th Bilateral Steering Committee Mexico-EU (September 30th 2020)

In 2005, the “Agreement for Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the European Community and the United Mexican States” came into force. It establishes the framework for bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest where research and development activities in science, technology and innovation are carried out. This Agreement has been renewed every five years. On September 30, 2020, its five-year renewal was confirmed for the period 2020-2025.

The Agreement establishes the creation of a Mexico-EU Bilateral Science, Technology and Innovation Steering Committee that promotes and supervises the different scientific and technological cooperation activities, co-chaired by the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the Directorate for International Cooperation of the Directorate for Research and Innovation of the European Commission (DG RTD). This Committee meets every two years to review the progress of the cooperation and update the roadmap.

On September 30, 2020 the 10th Bilateral Steering Committee was held - in this event the renewal of the Mexico-EU Agreement on Science and Technology 2020-2025 was celebrated - in a virtual meeting co-chaired by the Director General of CONACYT, Dra. María Elena Álvarez-Buylla Roces, and the Director of International Cooperation in Research and Innovation of the European Commission, Maria Cristina Russo, with the participation of the Executive Director of AMEXCID, Dr. Laura Elena Carrillo; the Head of Mission of Mexico to the EU, Amb. Mauricio Escanero; and the Charge d'Affaires of the EU Delegation in Mexico, Jean-Pierre Bou.

The five-year renewal of the Agreement for the period 2020-2025 supports the ongoing strengthening of our bilateral strategic partnership and provides additional opportunities to strengthen our cooperation in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and other global challenges.
